Drive Arounds For Dummies 01.04.02

Apparently drivers do not understand what a drive around is. It is to DRIVE AROUND. It is not an additional lane. People seem to believe it is. Thankfully the city has painted diagonal lines on the 3040/Morris Rd intersection, so that people will realize it is not a lane. However, further up the road there is an intersection, with a turning lane. That lane is to be used for people turning right, or to drive around those turning left. However, many people do not understand this. On one occasion, there were 3 vehicles in that turning lane, none in the other. Now, any true TX driver would understand that that means that all the vehicles are turning, and not one going straight, because, being that there is no one on the other lane, no one is turning left and therefore, making use of a drive around is just plain silly. Well, knowing this, we drove on the correct lane. However, when the light turned green, all three vehicles on the left went straight. Because we had the right of way, we kept going, however, so did they. Luckily we yielded to the first two, but the third basically ran us off the road pushing us onto oncoming traffic, THEN had the rudeness of honking at us, as if it was our own fault for their stupidity.

Yesterday, at the same intersection, this one car got onto that turning lane, and turned. Which is legal, however, after completing the turning, turned back onto 3040, passing 2 cars and being able to semi-legally run the red light. Then at the next intersection, having to stop behind an 18-wheeler at the next light, that very same car got onto that drive around, drove around the truck, and then continued. Now this IS illegal, for he clearly ran that red light. That drive around was meant to be used if that 18-wheeler planned to turn left, and of course, if the light was green.

Now, this act was not done by some hot rodding teenager with a freshly laminated license, so do not blame them. This daring fellow was an adult male, possibly in his 40s! Now one would think that the 4 drivers would have enough sense to know how to drive in Flower Mound if they are residents, and if they are not, should not use our roads in the first place, there's too much traffic on them. I can either blame the outtastaters who move here, or the city who refuse to expand the roads. Neighboring cities have adjusted their roads to suit the needs of the rapidly increasing population. However, they seem to need to use our streets to access DFW for some reason. So, to decrease traffic, if you don't know how to drive, DON'T DRIVE! ~ N

3040 no longer has this issue as since 2006 it was replaced with a 6 lane asphalt road with turning lanes.
