Gas Drilling Controversy Fuels Flower Mound Voter Turnout
Many Wait Nearly 2 Hours to Cast Ballots

Lines were long and the wait for many voters nearly two hours in Flower Mound's contentious municipal election, fueled by an issue that isn’t even on the ballot -- natural gas drilling. However, three key positions are up for grabs in the Denton County community that could influence a future vote on a drilling moratorium -- mayor and two council seats.

Voters in one precinct gathered at the courthouse in a line that snaked out the front door and around the building. "I don’t want gas drilling in the area in which I live and so, I want to place my vote based on who's going to restrict the gas drilling in the areas that would be safe for my family and my neighbors," Theresa Delvou said.
John Ellig, along with his wife, braved a 1 hour and 36 minute wait in order to vote. "We've been here for 15 years and I've never seen anything like it," Ellig said. "This is more for the candidate … who you want to vote for in regard to the moratorium vote coming up in November -- to get it on the ballot."

Several others stood in line for similar amounts of time and echoed Ellig's sentiments. However, Delvou said the long lines prevented her from casting her ballot. "I can’t wait, I got to go pick up my daughter," she said. "I want to do my civic duty and this is ridiculous, how it was organized. It's a huge election." Delvou said she hoped to return later in the day and vote.
